What is an AI digital worker?
Updated · By the Rini team — we build Rini, and say where it isn't the right fit.
Short answer
An AI digital worker is an AI agent that owns a specific job. You give it a role, the tools it may use and the rules it must follow; it then does the work on its own schedule — triaging email, drafting support replies, preparing fix plans, writing meeting follow-ups — and hands you finished results to approve. Unlike a chatbot it doesn't wait for prompts, and unlike scripted automation it handles judgement-heavy work.
The four parts of a digital worker
- A role — what it is responsible for, written in plain words ("keep the support queue under control").
- Tools — the systems it may act in, such as Gmail, GitHub, Zendesk or your calendar, granted one by one.
- Rules — what it may do alone and what needs a human yes.
- A record — a log of everything it did, so its work can be reviewed and reversed.
Examples of AI digital workers
| Worker | What it does | Tools it typically uses |
|---|---|---|
| Email worker | Sorts mail by priority, drafts replies, chases follow-ups | Gmail, Google Calendar |
| Support agent | Drafts answers to new tickets, escalates sensitive ones | Zendesk, Intercom, Notion |
| Developer | Turns bug reports into fix plans and pull requests | GitHub, Sentry, Linear |
| Researcher | Compiles competitor and vendor briefs | The web, Notion, Google Drive |
| Meeting assistant | Joins calls, transcribes, writes the follow-up | Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Zoom |
| Website assistant | Answers visitors, qualifies leads, books calls | Your website, calendar |
How a digital worker's day works
Using Rini as the example: you describe the worker once. From then on it runs on a schedule — every 15 minutes, every hour, every 6 hours, or once a day — reads through the tools you connected, and leaves its work as drafts. Before anything risky (sending an email, merging a change, spending money) it stops and asks. Each morning you get a short summary of what got done, what's waiting on you, and anything it wasn't sure about.
Digital worker vs chatbot vs automation
| Chatbot | Scripted automation / RPA | AI digital worker | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starts work | When you type | On a fixed trigger | On its own schedule or a trigger |
| Handles judgement | Yes, in conversation | No — follows the script | Yes, within its role and rules |
| Acts in your tools | Rarely | Yes, exactly as scripted | Yes, only the tools you granted |
| Human oversight | You read every reply | Usually none | Approval gates and a full log |
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI digital worker in simple terms?
It's an AI teammate with a job description. You tell it what it's responsible for and which tools it can use, and it does that work and reports back — you approve anything that goes out.
What is the difference between a digital worker and a digital person?
Rini uses "digital person" for a digital worker with its own name, personality and voice — for example Noah the email worker or Mira the support agent — so it can work alongside a team, and even speak in meetings.
Do AI digital workers need coding to set up?
Not with Rini. You describe the role in plain language and choose tools from a list; most people have a first worker running in under five minutes.
What jobs are AI digital workers best at?
Repetitive, judgement-light-to-medium work with a clear output: inbox triage and drafts, first-pass support answers, bug-report triage, research briefs, meeting notes and follow-ups.
